Why this one is harder than it looks
An upright piano runs 400 to 800 pounds concentrated over a small footprint, with a cast iron plate inside carrying the string tension. The weight sits high and toward the back, so a piano tips far more easily than its bulk suggests, and once it goes it does not stop. Baby grands are heavier again and require the legs and lyre come off, which has to be done supported or the case is damaged. Stairs multiply every one of these problems.
Where it actually ends up
Playable pianos are worth an attempt at rehoming, though the market is genuinely poor and most schools and churches already have one. Beyond that, a piano breaks down usefully: the cast iron plate and strings are substantial scrap metal, and the case and soundboard go to licensed disposal. Much of a piano's weight is recoverable metal.
