Why this one is harder than it looks
The problem with e-waste is legal rather than physical. Illinois prohibits disposing of covered electronic devices in landfills, so a hauler who shrugs and throws your TV in with the household debris is breaking the law on your behalf. Old CRT televisions add a real physical problem too, since a 32-inch tube set runs over 100 pounds and the tube contains leaded glass that must go to a recycler equipped for it.
Where it actually ends up

CRT tubes go to recyclers specifically equipped for leaded glass. This stream never goes to a landfill, both because it is illegal and because a modern TV holds recoverable material worth processing.
